GRAVESEND NEXT FOR TOP FORM DEAN
IT WILL be next stop Gravesend for wrestling's man of the moment Dean Allmark (pictured above left). After regaining the All Star Superslam title and belt earlier in the year, the Wirral-based favourite won the high profile 'King of the Rumble' knockout at Croydon on May 17 and is now gearing-up for a tilt at the British tag team title on Friday May 31. The setting will be Gravesend's Woodville Hall and Deano will partner mountain of muscle Leon Shah (below far left) against formidable title holders Rampage Brown and Robbie Dynamite (top right) on a night that brings a half term treat for younger fans taking the form of a reduced ticket price of £10 for under 16s and, in addition, the regular family ticket offer of £45 for two adults and two children will also be available. Dean Allmark won the big Croydon knockout tournament, defeating James Mason in the fatal four way final. To get there 'Xtreme' Dean put out Jonny Storm; Mason went through when opponent Leon Shah was forced to retire through injury; Mark Haskins put out Marty Scurll; and Heddi Karaoue defeated El Ligero. In the over the top rope final, France-based Karoui was first to go, followed by Haskins before Allmark clinched victory eliminating Mason. In other Croydon matches Skull Murphy made his legendary 'standing gaiter' submission move count in a hardcore clash with T.J.Stomper and with a dozen wrestlers patrolling at ringside Rampage Brown took the honours in a Canadian Lumberjack clash with Sam Adonis.

FAREWELL TO MICK McMANUS, THE
MAN WE ALL LOVED TO HATE!

A SPECIAL GRAPPLEVINE TRIBUTE BY RUSSELL PLUMMER
MICK McManus, the man generations of wrestling fans loved to hate during the golden years of British televised wrestling, died early on Wednesday (May 22) at the age of 93. In failing health for some time following the death of his wife last year, Mick was bitterly disappointed not to be well enough to attend All Star's Legends Night event at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon, in June 2012 and also missed the Southern Wrestlers' Reunion, his first absence for many years from the popular event staged early each August at the Kent pub run by Wayne and Sarah Bridges. Born on South London's Old Kent Road, and billed during his wrestling days from New Cross, a long career started in the mid-1940s and continued until Mick hung up his boots in 1982, although he retained his interest in wrestling during a spell as matchmaker for Dale Martin Promotions. In our pictures from left to right we see Mick with tag partner 'Iron Man' Steve Logan; battling with Jackie Pallo; in the thick of the action against Jackie Turpin and, finally, with Vic Faulkner waiting to be presented to the Duke of Kent in the Royal Albert Hall ring. Noted for storming into the fray behind a barrage fo forearm smashes - and never adverse to the odd blind side punch when referees' attention was distracted - Mick was part of a wave of lighter stars who pushed the heavyweights out of their traditional main event prominence when ITV cameras zoomed in from 1956. By the time of his retirement Mick had clocked up a record 183 'World of Sport' solo bout appearances, including epic clashes against his most bitter rival Jackie Pallo, and to televised solo could added a string of tag team outings alongside Steve Logan. Mick was a long reigning Southern Atherea welterweight champion. He battled with Wigan's Jack Dempsey for the British welterweight belt and also has a run as European middleweight champion. After the ITV plug was pulled in 1988, All Star produced their own video spectacular based on a Croydon event in September 1988 when Mick turned his hand to commentating on bouts in a star-studded line-up including Kendo Nagasaki, Skull Murphy, Pete Roberts, Johnny Saint, Steve Grey, Dave Finlay, Robbie Brookside, Danny Collins and Steve Regal. In contrast to the hurly burly of the wrestling arena, away from the spotlight Mick's passion was antiques and fine art. Needless to say, everyone at All Star extends their sympathy to all of Mick's family and friends.
